Cavan town does not have an enormous number of options for a proper
sit-down dinner that still feels relaxed rather than formal, and Luso,
tucked behind the Black Horse Inn on Church Street, fills that gap
reasonably well. The room is informal, there is no dress code, and the
food, sourdough Neapolitan pizza and dry aged smash burgers, is built
for sharing rather than for two separate plated courses arriving in
silence.
The pizza dough ferments for roughly three days before it reaches the
stone oven, and comes topped with Corleggy parmesan from Belturbet and
rocket from along the Annalee. The burgers use dry aged beef from Herd
Butchery in Butlersbridge. A rotating craft beer list and a short
cocktail menu give the evening somewhere to go after the food, rather
than ending abruptly once the plates are cleared.
Luso is open Thursday to Sunday evenings, which makes it a natural fit
for a Friday or Saturday night out, and holds 4.9 out of 5 from 136
Google reviews, one of the highest ratings of any restaurant in Cavan
town. For a first date or an anniversary dinner where the goal is good
food without anyone feeling like they need to perform, the informality
of the room works in its favour rather than against it.
Finding the entrance takes a short walk along Church Street, watching
for the Black Horse Inn rather than for Luso's own sign, since the door
sits behind the pub rather than facing the street. It is worth arriving
a few minutes early on a first visit to allow for that.
There are more obviously romantic settings in the county, candles and
tablecloths and the rest of it, but for two people who would rather
split a pizza and a couple of drinks than sit through a set menu, Luso
does the job without any of the theatre, and does it well enough that
the food carries the evening on its own.
Booking ahead is worth doing for a Friday or Saturday evening
specifically, since the room is not large and both nights tend to fill.
Thursday and Sunday evenings generally carry less risk of a wait for
anyone who would rather keep the evening simple and not have to plan
around a booking window.
