  • Psychographic: This segments your audience based on psychological factors like lifestyle, social status, activities, opinions, and interests. For example, if you know your customers tend to be big sports fans, you can target your advertising around game day.
  • Geographic: This segment focuses on targeting people based on where they live. Common geographic segments are local, state, region, and country. For example, if the majority of your customers live in California, marketing winter gear to this audience might not be the right call.
  • Behavioural: This type of segmentation creates audiences based on a user’s interactions with your brand. For example, if you run an e-commerce business, you can create a segment of users who haven’t made a purchase in 60 days and target them with an email campaign to try to win them back.

Segmenting your target market allows for effective marketing with efficient spending and improved customer retention. If you send all of your content to the entirety of your contact list, your subscribers will tire of receiving material that isn’t useful to them.

The first step toward identifying these prospects is putting together an ideal customer profile, sometimes called a buyer persona. This is essentially a detailed description of your target demographic that includes the following characteristics.

Age

Do your potential customers mostly fit in a millennial age bracket, or are they more often middle-aged? This is important to understand because customers in different age groups will respond differently to how your product is designed and marketed.

Gender

Depending on the types of products you sell, gender can play a role in how your audience reacts to your messaging. Generally speaking, the needs and goals of specific genders are often strikingly different. If you promote your business in a way that fails to address these differences, you could end up reducing the effectiveness of your campaigns.

Income level

Knowing how much disposable income your customers possess should directly influence your marketing strategies. Low-income families may be drawn to products or services that help save them money. Customers in higher-income brackets, on the other hand, may respond more favourably to marketing that emphasizes luxury and exclusivity.

Location

Broadly speaking, the buying habits of urban residents often differ from those of people living in rural areas. Where people reside and the types of communities they live in influence their purchasing preferences.

Use your own financial and business data to determine who your ideal customers might be. Then use market research to see how your actual customers measure up.

You can learn about your target audience through primary and secondary market research. Primary research involves learning about customers’ buying habits through direct contacts, such as:

Surveys

Distribute surveys to potential customers via paper, email, or web-based services. Surveys help you gather useful data directly from your customers. You can ask them questions outright about what previous services and strategies they liked, then take that feedback into account for your next marketing campaign.

Interviews

Talk to people you trust and whose purchasing habits dovetail with your small business. This approach is a bit more traditional and direct than a survey and provides you with candid responses for your marketing campaigns.

Focus groups

Get feedback from small groups who fit your customer profile through Q&A sessions and discussions.

Of course, you should never overlook current customers as a source of insight. When applied to clients, the same three methods not only help you better understand your target audience but can also guide you into better service skills.

Do you ever ask customers to fill out forms or leave reviews when they purchase your product or service? If so, they may be open to answering questions about their age, where they live, and their purchasing preferences. Invite them to share information voluntarily.

3. Reassess Your Offerings

With a comprehensive customer profile in place, the next step is to look at your products or services in a fresh light. Given what you know about the target audience, ask yourself:

  • Which features and benefits are most likely to attract new business?
  • Which may be of less interest or even discourage new customers?
  • Which should I place front and centre in my marketing and paid advertising?
  • Which current customers, images, and copywriting should shape my messaging?

This analysis can lead to valuable modifications to your offering and yield new leads.

You’ll also want to reassess your target audience periodically. Every six months or once a year, do some additional primary research and refine your customer profile accordingly. As the marketplace shifts and evolves, your ideal clientele may change with it. Get ahead of the curve, and you’ll also be one step ahead of your competition.

4. Research Your Competitors

As a marketer, one effective way to learn about what areas to focus on and which strategies to employ is by observing your competitors. This way, you can find out what strategies are already effective in your niche and how you can incorporate those into your marketing plan. Here are a few things to consider:

Which Social Networks Are They Using?

Social media marketing has been a game-changer for e-commerce brands and business-to-business companies. Researching your competitor’s social media will allow you to look for the content that receives the most engagement. The common channels to review include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Snapchat.

Research how often they post, what they post, the influencers they tend to work with, and so on. Such research will also identify the most suitable social media platforms with an already existing target audience base. You can target the same audience with your content, knowing they are already interested in that niche.

For example, if your target audience regularly interacts with your competitors’ posts on TikTok, it might be time to jump on the bandwagon.

What Are Their Customers’ Pain Points?

Pain points are the problems your target customers are already facing and looking to solve. Identifying your audience’s pain points lets you present your products as viable solutions in a targeted way. You and your competitors probably try to solve the same pain points for your customers. While researching your competitors, identify where their approach is lacking and try to better address solutions in those areas with your marketing plan.

5. Leverage Existing Customer Data

While devising your marketing plan, make use of the insights you have already gathered from existing customer records. Identifying patterns in this data and properly using them in your plan will help you build a more effective marketing strategy.

Use Google Analytics Data

Google Analytics is a great resource to identify patterns among your target audience. Google’s demographic information gives you insight into the age and gender of your audience. This data is broken down into affinity markets and in-market segments and gives valuable audience insights. These analytics allow you to know your audience better and create more relevant content for them, which will be more effective in generating sales for your business.

Review Customer Relationship Management Data

A customer relationship management (CRM) system is software that allows companies to manage their interactions with potential customers. Customer data like name, age, contact information, certain behaviour (like items viewed and previously purchased), and other engagement data are stored neatly in this software. CRM analytics show you more about your customers and your target audience at a glance.

This software can also give valuable insights you can use to identify patterns for different purchases, helping you segment your audience. Common patterns to look for include:

  • How did they find your site for the first time?
  • How many interactions did it take to complete a purchase?
  • Did they use coupons?
  • Are they typically on mobile or desktop devices?

Which Social Media Platforms Do They Use?

Social media has proven its mettle when it comes to audience analytics and related tools. Knowing which social media platforms your audience uses can help you decide what analytic tools to invest in.

Facebook allows you access to the demographics of your audience and their interests through Facebook analytics. Similarly, Twitter provides ad accounts with a follower dashboard that tells you more about the interests of your followers. These analytics can help you identify your target audience and also help you create proper strategies for maximum content engagement.

Finding the right audience is crucial for the effectiveness of your marketing campaign. Not everyone is interested in what you’re selling or what you have to say, so you need to identify whom to focus your efforts on.

A pronounced pivot toward e-commerce and video has seen global ad spend bottom out quicker than expected, with forecast falls now expected hit the floor with a 7.5% contraction to $587bn in 2020 – as opposed to a 9.1% fall as initially feared.According to Zenith’s Advertising Expenditure Forecasts, the advertising sector is proving to be more resilient than expected and is now expected to bounce back by 5.6% next year to reach $620bn.No mere dead cat bounce the rise is given credence by a surge in connected TV advertising as well as the delayed Summer Olympics and UEFA tournament.

How is global ad spend holding up?

  • Zenith’s metrics show that 2021 growth of 5.6% will be fractionally behind the 5.8% uptick it forecast back in July, falling short of the $634bn spent in 2019.
  • A recovery to pre-crisis spending is not expected until 2022, when a further 5.2% growth will see spending total $652bn.
  • All these forecasts are couched under the proviso that there will be no further black swan events to snuff out the tentative recovery.
  • What factors lie behind the improving outlook?
  • A universal shift in advertising budgets towards digital channels is providing a much-needed source of growth, with global digital ad spend expected to rise 1.4% in 2020, equivalent to a 52% share of total ad spend.
  • An explosion in e-commerce growth is not expected to tail off either, with Zenith confidently predicting that digital will account for 58% of all spend by 2023.
  • Another bright spot lies in connected TV’s as people flock to streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) providers such as Netflix and Disney+, whose reach has expanded by 5% in the US as people switch off from the world outside.
  • While advertisers are locked out of SVOD, ad-funded video on demand has enjoyed the strongest growth of all, jumping 9% to reach 5.5m US households.
  • Commenting on the findings Christian Lee, global managing director at Zenith, said: “Now that it offers mass reach in key markets, it’s the right time for brands to invest in connected TV.
  • ”Brands should use connected TV for both branding and performance, exploiting its high ad recall and full targeting and tracking capabilities to drive awareness and sales conversions at the same time.”

How is e-commerce shaking up ad spend?

  • A revolution in retail is feeding through to unprecedented demand for retailer media which promote products at the point of purchase, akin to in-store displays of old.
  • Crucially retailer media is allocated from commercial rather than marketing budgets, thus expanding ad expenditure as a whole. In all, Zenith anticipates the sector will jump from $35bn spend in 2019 to $51bn in 2020.
  • Ali Nehme, global chief commerce officer at Publicis Groupe, said: “Retail platforms are powering their growth by putting pressure on brand margins. Their focus on bottom out price wars, and enhanced consumer experiences, benefit consumers while brands bear the cost.
  • “In this scenario, brands must flex their power, by selecting retailer partners who offer demonstrable value through transparent data and measurement, as well as the ability to deliver the consumers who will drive much-needed category growth.”
  • A global jump in social media ad spend of 56.4% in the third quarter has also provided a timely boost.

Are there any regional variations in performance?

  • The global picture in the report masks significant regional variations with Asia Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe expected to lead the way in terms of growth, attaining 2019 levels of ad spend as early as 2021.
  • Zenith expects ad spend in both regions to shrink by 6% in 2020 and grow by 7% in 2021.
  • Elsewhere North America is expected to prove more resilient than most, declining by just 5.3% in 2020 courtesy of a spending boost driven by the presidential election.

What 9/11 can teach us about marketing in the time of coronavirus

With the economy reeling and uncertainty lingering, there may be a tendency to put brand plans on hold and freeze spending. But Bradley Johnson, looking at the current crisis through the lens of 9/11, maintains that would be counterproductive. “The economy needs marketers and marketing,” Johnson writes, recalling General Motors’ “Keep America Rolling” campaign (see next item) in 2001. “Marketing helps drive commerce. Marketers have an opportunity to give consumers a reason to spend—deals, products, services—even when we are bunkered up and hunkered down.” Johnson points to how comments  from industry executives in 2001 seem eerily familiar (“We are on hold, and taking it day by day. Nothing is typical anymore.“) and recalls Ad Age’s counsel to the market just days after 9/11.

“Time stood still during other crisis events,” Ad Age wrote to readers at the time. “After each, we sought explanations, took actions and grieved. We did not forget those times, and we will never forget what happened Sept. 11. But we moved ahead for the good of the nation in the wake of other crises. So it must be now.”

General Motors looks to roll again

General Motors is taking a page from its own “Keep America Rolling” playbook mentioned above. According to Automotive News, the company is offering 0 percent interest,  84-month loans and deferred payments of up to 120 days to customers in top credit tiers. Ford and Hyundai have announced similar programs aimed at helping buyers as the coronavirus pandemic causes economic uncertainty. The programs “demonstrate for customers that we’re there for them,” GM spokesman Jim Cain told Automotive News. “The financing offers are a way to reinvigorate people.”

China could lead the way back

While the U.S. and much of the world is just beginning to feel the full extent of the coronavirus, agencies in China are starting to return to their offices for the first time since January. “Chinese agencies and marketers started [preparing] early and thankfully finished early,” R3 Co-Founder and Principal Greg Paull tells Ad Age’s Lindsay Rittenhouse. “By extending Chinese New Year and strictly following government guidelines, it’s meant that life is more ‘back to normal’ now than any other client-agency ecosystem on Earth.” Read the story here to learn how local agency executives are beginning the recovery process.

Ad Council jumps into action

The Ad Council is teaming up with the White House, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to “provide critical and urgent messages to the American public,” the group said in a statement. These will be disseminated by media companies and digital platforms who have donated inventory on their TV channels, radio networks, social pages, outdoor space and other digital media. “National broadcast PSAs featuring the U.S. Surgeon General will communicate the ways Americans can protect themselves and those most at risk,” writes Jeanine Poggi. “That script, developed by Group SJR, will also be made available as a template for media companies to create assets with their own local and state public health officials.”

ViacomCBS, meanwhile, is using its airtime to explain the importance of social distancing with a push called #AloneTogether via the Ad Council. The push encourages people “to find comfort and connection through entertainment” and reminds people that social distancing doesn’t have to mean social isolation. Read more here. 

Is your phone spying on you? 

While technology is allowing widespread working from home, it may also take a darker turn as quarantines, curfews and lockdowns take hold in many areas around the country. The Washington Post is reporting that the U.S. government is “in active talks with Facebook, Google and a wide array of tech companies and health experts about how they can use location data gleaned from Americans’ phones to combat novel coronavirus, including tracking whether people are keeping one another at a safe distances to stem the outbreak.” The idea, says the Post, is to collect the data anonymously in aggregate to map the spread of infection. But as the ad industry well knows, privacy concerns are a major flashpoint with consumers.

Just briefly

PHD scores a win: Diageo chose Omnicom Media Group’s PHD as its agency of record across the majority of its global media business following a “closely contested review,” says Isabel Massey, the brand’s global media director. The review, which kicked off in September 2019, involved longtime incumbent Dentsu Aegis Network’s Carat. The incumbent agency had previously handled media responsibilities for North America, Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Life after Lesser: AT&T’s John Stankey sent a note to employees this week reassuring them on the future of the company’s Xandr ad unit following the departure of CEO Brian Lesser. “While I am disappointed Brian will not be with us for the next chapter, I want you to know that our commitment to making advertising matter has not changed,” Stankey, who is president and chief operating officer at AT&T and CEO of WarnerMedia, wrote in a memo obtained by Ad Age. 

Home cooking: Amazon is pausing shipments of non-essential products to its warehouses as it tries to manage its supply chain strained by coronavirus-related demand, writes Garett Sloane. But what’s essential might be up for debate. Among several Amazon Fresh items ordered by this writer, only one was limited: Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.
