Marketing doesn’t have to drain your budget. With creativity and consistency, you can build momentum and attract customers for free.

Key Takeaways

  • Partnerships beat ad spend when you collaborate with people who serve the same audience.
  • Consistent, repurposed content builds visibility faster than polished, expensive marketing.
  • Real relationships and referrals outperform paid campaigns — momentum is the real marketing engine.

When I first launched my business, I didn’t have a marketing budget. But what I did have was creativity, time and a sense of urgency to get my name out there. You don’t need thousands of dollars to make a big marketing impact. You just need consistency, connections and a willingness to get a little scrappy. Some of the best marketing strategies don’t cost a lot of money — they just require a high level of intention and effort.

Here are five ways to market your business without spending money (or spending very little).

1. Build partnerships

Partnerships are one of the most cost-effective ways to grow your audience. Look for businesses that serve the same type of customer as you, but don’t compete with you.

If you’re a fitness coach, you can partner with a nutritionist or a local smoothie shop. If you’re a photographer, team up with a florist or wedding planner. Host a workshop together, share each other’s email lists (with permission) or collaborate on a giveaway.

When two businesses with similar audiences join forces, both brands win. You expand your reach and build community, all without paying for ads!

2. Use the power of free platforms

Social media is the great equalizer for small businesses. Currently, TikTok and YouTube Shorts offer the most organic reach and allow you to get in front of thousands of people without spending any money.

Don’t overthink your content. Film short videos sharing tips, behind-the-scenes moments with your team or what you’re up to in the community. Remember that authenticity often outperforms polished content.

One thing that has been helpful in my business is repurposing content. A 30-second video we make for a TikTok gets reposted on Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn. One idea can work four times harder for you!

3. Grow and nurture your email list

Your email list is the most valuable marketing asset because it’s all yours. Social media platforms can change their algorithms overnight, but your list gives you direct access to your audience through their inboxes.

Start collecting email addresses as soon as possible. Add a signup form to your website and social media bios, and offer something in return, such as a discount code, a free e-book or a mini course.

Once people are on your email list, stay consistent. Send regular updates, tips or insights that make them look forward to hearing from you.

4. Share your voice

Visibility builds credibility, and there are so many ways to share your expertise.

Start by pitching yourself as a guest on podcasts that reach your target audience. You’ll get exposure to new listeners and position yourself as an authority. Or, start your own show. There are free and low-cost hosting platforms to help you publish your podcast for under $100 a month.

If you prefer writing, contribute articles to local publications or industry blogs. If you’re more comfortable speaking, offer to speak at community events, meetups or conferences. These opportunities give you a captive audience and can drive new clients to your business. (Pro tip: end your presentation with a QR code that links directly to your email signup or freebie.)

5. Engage your community and encourage word of mouth

The most powerful marketing tool still comes down to relationships. Get involved in your community, whether that’s through volunteering, joining a local business group or partnering with a non-profit. When people know and trust you, they’ll naturally want to support you.

And don’t be shy about asking for referrals and reviews. Most happy clients are glad to share your name; they just need a little nudging. Send a quick follow-up email or text asking for a Google review or testimonial. Those words from real customers are more persuasive than any ad you could run!

You can even start a small referral program. Offer a discount or bonus for every new client someone sends your way. It doesn’t have to cost much, but it creates a ripple effect that builds loyal advocates for your brand.

At the end of the day, great marketing doesn’t always come from money–it comes from momentum. Every video you post, email you send and relationship you build compounds over time. Keep showing up in your community, keep adding value and soon you’ll realize you don’t need a big budget to make a big impact.

Local advertising is an effective way to extend your business’s reach, but it can be tricky if you don’t know where to start.

Engaging your local community is essential if you want to get it off the ground and work toward success. Thanks to my years of marketing experience building and nurturing local relationships, I have a good idea of what does and doesn’t work. Any local marketing effort aims to nurture lasting relationships that will help increase brand awareness and revenue. To do this, you must form genuine connections with people in your community, develop an effective strategy and remain patient.

Here, consider some of my top tips to build your local marketing strategy.

Participate in Community Involvement

Giving back, when and if you can, is highly recommended. You can volunteer to assist at local events, help clean up or do garden work at nearby parks, or sponsor a local school’s charity event. Community involvement allows you to meet amazing people in your neighborhood who may become clients or refer you to others who become clients. Volunteering is a win-win situation. You have the chance to help those in need, all while expanding your network and increasing business visibility.

Work with Other Local Businesses

Another way to effectively market your business is to reach out to other local businesses. It may be surprising to find out how many are willing to partner with you in some way.

For example, another business may have a lot of foot traffic but a limited email list. In this case, you could offer to mention their business in your online newsletter for some type of physical advertising on their premises. You can create the partnership that works best for you.

Offer Local Discounts

Giving out coupon codes and free shipping to your local area will help encourage more people to order from you. Word of mouth is powerful, and this is a great way to leverage this marketing technique. It will also help increase loyalty within the local area.

Use Personalized Messaging

Take time to personalize your branding to your local community. For example, if you sell physical products, give more attention to the local area by designing them with local sports teams’ colors, mascots, and more. Consumers want to feel close to the purchases they make, and there’s no better way to create this feeling than by providing something unique. You can also offer a “special edition” of your product that’s available to your community, creating the mindset there’s even more value behind this product.

When engaging with and marketing to the local community, be sure to keep the tips and information here in mind, which will help ensure you reach people locally and provide them with information, resources, and products they want and need. With the right local advertising strategy, it will be easier to help get your business off the ground or establish a new customer base, both of which are essential to your long-term success.

From Dunkin’ Donuts to the NBA, countless brands have hitched a ride on TikTok, the latest social media bandwagon. Since its launch in 2018, the user-generated, video-based app quickly grew from its China origin to an international sensation. With nods to its predecessor, Vine (RIP), TikTok turns nearly every content creator into a top-tier video editor and storyteller. The platform delights millions of users with its endless stream of FYP (For You Page) content, that is specifically geared towards your searches, interests, and frequently viewed subject matter.

This firehose of varietal media serves as sort of a time vortex. New users should be warned, your innocent “five-minute scroll” before bedtime can quickly turn into a three-hour content binge before you can say “lights out.” The average user spends at least 45 minutes on the app each day. Naturally, this rapid-fire of content consumption makes TikTok an alluring marketing tool for brands. If you can get your business name simply in the feed stream, you’re doing okay. But with a little creativity, you can take it a step further and generate content geared towards keeping viewers engaged.

8 Best Ways to Market Your Business on TikTok

1. Don’t Aim For Perfection

Contrary to the polished and pristine standards of Instagram, TikTok won’t need you to be editing out blemishes or cropping out that mess on the floor. The app thrives on seemingly authentic content. You will likely find the most engagement when your content is true to your brand personality and intentionally crafted.

2. Paid Ads

If the user-friendly algorithm isn’t enough, the platform is also delving into the realm of paid ads. If you have experience using Facebook Business Suite, you are already prepared to tackle TikTok ad campaigns. Curiously, the platform’s paid ads are designed quite similar to Facebook or Google.

You essentially have two options when it comes to TikTok ads: interest targeting and behavioural targeting. Interest targeting works the most equivalently to Facebook Ads. Through this method, you can structure your ad placement to target a specific audience.

Behavioural targeting works a bit differently, allowing you to generate your ads based on user behaviour on the app within the past seven or fifteen days. This unique method ensures your content is geared towards individuals who are active on the platform.

3. Use Hashtags Liberally

While hashtags may be considered a bit archaic on Instagram, the metadata geo tracker is receiving a much-needed reboot on TikTok. As you plug your videos into the platform, be sure to use niche hashtags and plenty of them. This is an optimal method to grow your page organically.

Joining or creating a hashtag challenge is another way you can add your content to the Discover page. This starts with creating a catchy video often with a specific sound and adding a corresponding hashtag. These campaigns easily go viral as the engaging trend of choice catches on.

4. Join In On Trends

Much like the hashtag challenge, following other trends on TikTok is an ideal way to stay up to date with popular content on the platform. Users enjoy seeing different brands take part in funny and engaging content, as popular dances, challenges, songs, and video effects surge in viewership.

5. Be Bold With Your Original Content

The platform allows users to create 15 to 60 second videos using numerous filters, voiceovers, and virtually any song snippet. This limited-time window means you have less than a minute to optimize the “elevator pitch” of your brand. Keep in mind that TikTok is built on consumer engagement; the more user-friendly your content is, the higher views and comments you can expect. Keep your videos concise and attention-grabbing. Always prioritize quality over quantity.

6. Utilize Influencer Marketing

Influencers are an optimal way to gain viewers and to expand your reach to a brand new audience. Though one normally associates influencer content with the visual aesthetics of Instagram, influencers are taking to TikTok in order to gain new sponsorships. The process works similarly to Instagram, where there is an exchange of incentives – either monetary or product – for the promotion of your business. Influencers already have a loyal following, so placing your brand in front of a wider audience is an effective way to increase awareness.

7. Partner With Other Creators

TikTok is famous for its “duet” feature, where users can record videos that build upon another video. This popularized trend has resulted in a vast expanse of creative efforts – from barbershop quartet ditties to personal story prompts. Partnering with like-minded creators and utilizing TikTok live videos opens up the conversation with the audience and helps your brand feel personable.

8. Track Your Analytics Data

As you launch your promotional content and experiment with different trends, be sure to track your engagement through TikTok Analytics. These statistics provide valuable insights regarding your audience demographics and viewership. Don’t be afraid to try out different approaches as you go.
