Networking is an essential skill for entrepreneurs to learn because it generates business.

The term networking can become over complicated. It is simply starting and nurturing relationships which is something that humans do throughout life.

It doesn’t have to be difficult. Practice, repetition and following the tips below will help you build rewarding professional relationships wherever you are, whether that’s at work, a seminar, a party or on a flight.

Define Your Objectives.

Who do you want to meet and why? How many networking events will you commit to attending? Where will you go to network? How will you measure your progress? What do I want to get help with?

Asking yourself these powerful questions is a great place to start. You can’t hit a goal without a target, so be strategic about your time and your intentions.

Be Mindful Of Your Personal Brand

First impressions really do count. Before attending a networking event, think about how you will introduce yourself. Do you have an elevator pitch of around 30 seconds? If not, write and practice one. Make sure you are dressed well and feel confident in your appearance (whatever that means to you). Your personal brand also follows you online, so be mindful of how you want to show up.

Find A Networking Partner

Networking can feel scary. Introverts should find someone to attend events with to take the edge off. This tip is also very good if you know that you need help staying accountable. Having a networking partner will mean you’re both more likely to show up.

Be Vulnerable

Is anybody surprised that 75% of entrepreneurs have reported concerns for their mental health? Running a business is hard and can be a lonely road. This is not to say that you should treat networking as a free talking therapy, but be vulnerable about the problems in your industry or that you’re facing in business. Vulnerability builds deeper connections more quickly, and you never know if the person you’re talking to has the perfect solution to the issue that’s holding you back.

Take Advantage Of The Internet

LinkedIn is not just an online resume. It’s the most suited platform for building professional relationships, so make sure to interact with content, post your own content and send direct messages. Aside from LinkedIn, you can network on every other social media platform. Attending online workshops and being active in forums are other ways to meet people who share your interests.

Always Add Value

When you make a connection ask yourself two questions.

  1. How can I help this person?
  2. Who else in my network can help this person?

Openly sharing knowledge, contacts and opportunities to help others win will create a culture of generosity within the relationship. The other person will be more likely to help and introduce you to others when the time comes.

Listen

People tend to talk more than they listen. If you can learn to truly listen, you will gather so much information about people, the industries they are in and the professional problems they face. It is said that knowledge is power.

Follow Up

Networking doesn’t start until you follow up. Aim to send a text, email or direct message within 24 hours of meeting someone. Check in with them every 3 to 6 months to further nurture the relationship.

Review Your Progress

Six months after attending a networking event, review the relationships that were built. You might start to notice trends such as which types of events are the most beneficial to your networking goals. From this exercise, you can tailor your networking strategy if needed.

Take The Pressure Off

Building relationships is a skill that you have already been practicing for years, so try not to feel intimidated by the word networking or by trying to ‘do it right’. The more you network, the more confident you will get.

Networking is about establishing connections and creating a supportive community. Even if you don’t have a specific product or service to promote, your presence can still contribute to engaging conversations, the exchange of ideas, and potential collaborations.

Networking—just the word makes people want to run for the hills. It sounds transactional and slimy, even for the most extroverted professionals. The idea of approaching strangers, engaging in small talk, and forging connections can be overwhelming and depleting, especially for those who despise networking.

It is possible to successfully navigate the tumultuous networking landscape even if you despise the traditional approach. Learn strategies and insights to help you overcome networking aversion and build meaningful connections that align with your authentic self.

In his book, Endless Referrals, Bob Burg states that each person knows 250 people. That’s the average number of people attending a funeral, and each side invites to a wedding. With each person you meet, you can create a ripple effect. Here are six strategies for your consideration.

1. Embrace Your Introversion or Shyness

Networking is not just for extroverts. Quieter individuals have unique qualities that can make them superb networkers. Quiet leaders listen deeply, observe intently, and engage in meaningful one-on-one conversations. Leverage your introspective nature and ask thoughtful questions. This will help you develop genuine connections beyond mundane interactions that you wish to run away from.

2. Seek Quality Over Quantity

Do you feel under pressure to collect a stack of business cards or increase your LinkedIn follower count? Before you start talking to random people, focus on quality connections rather than simply gathering the names of random people. Look for people who align with your values, interests, or professional goals. You’ll build a robust support system that can provide valuable insights and opportunities by nurturing a few authentic relationships.

3. Leverage Online Networking Platforms

If face-to-face networking is not your thing, consider online networking. Social media platforms, Slack channels, and virtual events provide opportunities to connect with like-minded professionals from the comfort of your own home. Respond to posts, ask a question, share insights, and nurture relationships that suit your preferences. Take LinkedIn Learning courses and connect with the instructors. 4. Leverage Existing Relationships

Networking doesn’t always require meeting strangers. It will help if you leverage your existing relationships with colleagues, friends, or mentors to expand your network. Attend events or gatherings with an outgoing buddy, and allow them to introduce you to their connections. You can be introduced to many people by simply being their wing person. This can offer a sense of familiarity and comfort while expanding your network.

5. Focus on Building Genuine Relationships

Networking should not be transactional. As shared by Adam Grant, those who succeed give more than they take. Approach networking with a mindset of building genuine relationships, not seeing what you can immediately get out of that person. Utilize your active listening skills to cultivate a genuine interest in others and their stories. Listen carefully, exhibit empathy, and seek to provide value to others without expecting anything in return. By nurturing authentic relationships, you’ll naturally create a network that supports and uplifts you when you least expect it but when you need it most.

6. Find Networking Opportunities That Align with Your Interests

If you don’t enjoy golfing or meet-ups at bars, then don’t go. There is no one way to network and build relationships. Seek out networking opportunities that align with your interests or passions. Attend conferences, workshops, or gatherings cantered around your hobbies, industry-specific topics, or causes you care about. When networking feels purposeful and aligned with your values, it becomes more enjoyable and authentic. Networking doesn’t have to be something other people do, nor should you dread going to such an event. Founders open up about how personal connections helped them build lasting businesses.

When it comes to raising funds or getting new clients for your business, every person you meet could offer you a future opportunity. So, it’s crucial to never stop networking.

That’s exactly what LaToya Bass, owner and CEO of Alignment Business Solutions and Andy Rieger, founder and president of J. Rieger & Co, emphasized during a panel discussion in Kansas City in September. At a Meta Small Business Studio event, co-hosted by Inc., the two opened up about how unexpected connections helped grow their businesses.

“You never have any idea who the people are that you are talking to. And if you burn a bridge, you are only going to shoot yourself in the foot,” said Rieger, who runs a distillery in the West Bottoms Livestock Exchange district of Kansas City.

After building a retail location, and a production facility for his distillery, Rieger needed a way to expand his product and get it in more locations. He spent four days a week grabbing coffee and drinks with whoever he could find in the area; as recent Dallas transplant he was looking for local connections. During a New Year’s Eve party in 2019 when he met an investor, who seemed interested in his whiskey. Instead of playing host and enjoying his night off, he took 20 minutes to show him around the facility. When the pandemic hit and Rieger needed emergency capital to keep the business running, that one conversation led to a $2 million investment.

“When it comes to raising money, the number one thing that you can do whether you’re a coffee person or happy hour person, is get a drink with someone, no matter who they are,” says Rieger. “They might not be your financier right away but you never know how they could be there in the future.”

Bass agrees. She says her company, a professional services firm based in Kansas City, grew entirely through word of mouth and the relationships she’s built with clients. She started the business with no money; her first client actually paid her $5 an hour. The more clients she found the more she was able to up her fees. It was the positive interactions with clients that she says, propelled her business forward. Simply listening to people, she notes, goes a long way to building lasting relationships.

“When you’re talking to people, actually care about the conversation,” says Bass. “We only see people for a little bit of their day, and so make sure when you’re coming in contact with people, be positive and make sure you take care of them.”

Private online communities for like-minded professionals are growing in popularity – and they’re being used by employees to land their next role.

In 2015, David Feinman joined a new community of digital marketers on Skype. “It was 200 people bouncing ideas off one another,” explains the Pennsylvania-based video-advertising agency owner. “The founder had originally wanted to figure out an SEO [search] problem, so he brought a bunch of SEO workers into one group and had them work on it. After they solved the issue, people brought up other problems to fix; before you knew it, it was a superpower group.”

The community switched to messaging platform Slack. Membership soon swelled: thousands of workers began joining. Today, Online Geniuses has 40,000 digital marketers from all over the world. “We have different Slack channels for any type of digital marketing topic,” says Feinman, now a partner and moderator of the group. “Every day, people will share their questions, ideas and projects they’re working on; if you have a problem, you can be unstuck in minutes.”

Online Geniuses also acts as a job board, with a dedicated hiring channel. “Yesterday, we had six vacancies posted,” says Feinman. He estimates up to 40 roles are shared on the network every week, with members giving one another a “heads-up” on the latest opportunities at their companies. Contract work is also available. “It can be task-based, where someone is looking for a specific expert to run analytics, and the person who’s done it 200 times before replies and gets the work.”

Being part of the group can give candidates an edge when it comes to hiring: job-seekers can effectively receive an employee recommendation from within their network or have a head start in the hiring process based on their post history. “Members can make a name for themselves in front of thousands of people, just by helping others out,” says Feinman. “We have digital marketers from some of the biggest companies in the world as the peer group.”

Today, there is a growing number of private channels like this that enable professionals to network, problem solve and enhance their careers. Many of these are on Slack, with tech workers particularly utilising the collaboration tool they use every day at work to form online communities. Employees in these networks may increase their chances of landing their next role by forming connections that could potentially fast-track their application, rather than applying via a more traditional recruitment process or platform.

The benefits for these workers seem obvious. But access to closed groups, and their job-seeking opportunities, is ultimately decided by those who control them. As technology’s role in recruitment thrives, and demand for employees in certain sectors continues to flourish, these private networks are set to become a more ingrained component of the labour market going forward – with wider implications for the workforce writ large.

‘The hidden job market’

Networking and fostering professional relationships have long been key components of a career. So, in some ways, private job networks are nothing new.

Lauren Thomas, European economist at company-reviews website Glassdoor, based in London, says these types of communities have existed in previous guises. “These groups for people with similar professional backgrounds and interests are the online equivalent of inviting your acquaintances to the pub to discuss job opportunities: they’re like virtual networking sessions.”

Employers have also long taken advantage of these evolving communities, continues Thomas, as it allows them to widen the search for their ideal candidate. “From the classified section in newspapers, to websites and now social media to promote opportunities: every time a technological advance in communication has happened, employers have made use of it.”

However, these efforts may have ramped up following the hiring crisis, leading to a spike in vacancies being shared on private networks by employees and hiring managers. “Personal referrals resulting from networking are often more likely to be hired,” adds Thomas. “And with current labour shortages, employers are desperate to hire and are looking for any edge they can.”

Kathy Gardner, of remote job-site FlexJobs, based in New York City, describes these closed groups as part of a new “hidden job market”: a career opportunity not always posted across job boards, social media or company websites. “While this market once heavily relied on employee connections at a given company or word of mouth,” she adds, “advancements in tech and virtual tools have helped create new ways of carrying on the same concept.”

The rise of remote working has also boosted the growth of membership-based online groups. Feinman says with fewer opportunities to network in person, employees are looking to do so online instead. “Those that work remotely have lost that ability to have co-workers in their workspace. So, these communities are a super-powerful way of seamlessly connecting over a workday.”

For workers granted access to these communities, they not only have a network they can leverage to chat with peers and share knowledge – they also have a job-seeking tool they can utilise at will. “People will look for different specialties within our channel, freelance out work or offer a full-time job,” says Feinman. “Tons and tons of jobs have been exchanged within our community.”

The wider implications

Thomas believes these private online communities will continue to flourish and become a more ingrained part of job seeking. She says it speaks to a wider trend in how technology is being used in hiring. “It allows both sides of the market to evaluate more potential matches.”

While employee referrals have always been a way for candidates to fast-track their job applications, closed groups may have unintended consequences. “Although these online communities are being utilised by some workers, many others don’t know these groups exist,” says Carly Mednick, chief operating officer at New York-based recruiting company Monday Talent. “There can be a general lack of awareness.”

Increasingly, recruiters may tap into these networks as a hiring resource. “It’s something we’d absolutely consider,” says Mednick. “That said, there can be questions around diversity with invite-only channels. There can be a barrier for people who aren’t able to get into these communities because although they may be qualified, they may lack the connections to get into the group if it’s ‘exclusive’.”

A closed group means membership ultimately falls under the control of its moderators: the gatekeepers who decide whether an employee can be in a network. Online Geniuses has a 15-person team that runs its community. Feinman says while there is a mix of junior- and senior-level employees, around 25% of applications to the group end up rejected on the basis they don’t work within digital marketing. “We have a three-week manual vetting process with a waitlist of a thousand people at any given time. We constantly review profiles to ensure the group has a high quality. If anyone spams or doesn’t provide value, they’re removed.”

However, Feinman adds that access to the community is relatively straightforward and not exclusive. “If you’re in digital marketing, it’s not that hard to get in. It’s important to have people within that discipline and career so you end up with a group of people doing work that you can learn from. We want it to be the future of education for digital marketers: having a strong job network is simply a bonus.”

Bonus or not, the hiring crisis has shown workers will always be looking for better ways to find jobs – and that employers will always be looking for better ways to find good candidates. With the labour market still tight, these ‘whisper networks’ are likely to prove advantageous to both sides going forward.

“The use of these types of platforms for job postings speaks to how the market is shifting from more formal to more casual modes of communication,” says Thomas. “It’s no surprise both employers and employees see this as a complement to their current job search portfolio.”

It also helps in nurturing, as well as strengthening the relationship between you and your audience. The emails can be set to go out automatically probably once or twice a month. These emails may include;

As the co-founder of multiple million-dollar companies, I can fully appreciate the power of networking and have gone as far as closing high-ticket sales through a single social media message. Here are some tips for networking effectively:

1. Create a personal brand. 

What all of my businesses have in common is that they are focused on personal branding for individuals and businesses. With the rise of social media, having a rock-solid personal brand has become absolutely essential across the board. Getting prestigious mentions, appearing on Instagram and Facebook lives to share a message and engaging with one’s followers are the keys to success in 2020 and beyond.

The importance of having a credible personal brand is so that people can see your creativity, vision, consistency and reputation when they go to your profile. If you’re putting out consistent brand content with the angle you want to work on, it’s much easier for influencers to take you seriously and eventually work with you. Your personal brand goes far beyond entertaining or informing your followers. It’s your own personal billboard.

2. Reach out on social media. 

Through my latest venture organizing celebrity loop giveaways, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most renowned names, such as artist Snoop Dogg, comedian Kevin Hart, actress Bella Thorne and more. My way of going about sales is quite unconventional. I often “slide into the DMs” and make conversation that then grows into a sale.

While some say sliding in DMs is risky, I abide by the phrase “no risk, no reward.” If you aren’t willing to take risks in business, you need to honestly ask yourself why. Obviously don’t go and DM Drake hoping he will save your company, but you need to assess if the risk is attainable based on your skill set and brand. Start small and slowly work your way up.

3. Communicate to negotiate. 

I’ve always been drawn to high-profile people. Money aside, I love their motivation and mindset. Since I share the same mindset, it isn’t hard for me to establish a connection. We always mutually benefit one another. In business, everything is a two-way street. Communication and negotiation are crucial.

The best way to negotiate is to figure out what the other person wants most out of the deal. Once you figure that out, you can then present an opportunity that’s valuable to them. It’s not about the cost; rather, it’s about how much value you can provide. What can they gain? How can you provide for them? Answer those questions, and you will be a master negotiator.

4. Be enthusiastic and put in the work. 

My secret to networking isn’t all that secretive, after all. I simply approach everyone with a genuine attitude and enthusiasm. I back up this enthusiasm with a relentless work ethic because dreams alone don’t work. I put a lot of work into the process and do a lot of research into the celebrity, their team, and their management. Then, I tailor my pitch and send it off to the team. These are the fundamental steps of the process that I follow each time. I want to pioneer the industry as a leader, and one aspect that is crucial to me is that my team and I uphold the values of hard work, networking and showing up with enthusiasm on a daily basis.

As one of my best clients, Ricky Carruth, would say: “Relationships over transactions.” I’m not in this business to take advantage of people, but I’m in it to help others. Where can I provide value? How can I get everyone satisfied with my output? When you ask those questions, you will be setting yourself up for success.
